Greenwell Springs, LA – DEMCO Storm Center is actively monitoring hurricane Sally. On the heels of recent storms Marco and Laura, we are prepared with supplies on hand, and with additional stock items located such as extra poles, cross arms, transformers, wire, etc.; Member service employees are on standby ready to staff phone banks; Vacation plans are canceled; Contractors and out of state crews are on standby in case we need them.
Being one of America’s 900 co-ops means we have ready-access to crews, equipment and resources whenever needed, usually following severe weather.
“DEMCO has been on the receiving end of mutual-aid many times – last year after Tropical Storm Barry, after the great flood of 2016, after Gustav and Rita and Katrina,” said Randy Pierce, CEO and General Manager. “We do whatever we can to the greatest extent that we can, whether it’s for our members or for another co-op’s members – we are all in this together and we take that commitment to heart – it’s the co-op way.”
DEMCO crews returned home yesterday from Beauregard Electric and Jeff Davis Electric co-ops, where they had worked for more than two weeks in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. Crews, crew leaders, warehousemen, and other staff worked along with 1,800 outside crews following massive destruction and power outages.
“As part of our existing Emergency Response Plan, DEMCO is well-prepared to follow the rules and protocols required to comply with the COVID-19 public health and safety standards to protect our employees, our members, and any visiting crews who may be called to assist us with widespread outage restoration,” says Pierce.
DEMCO reminds everyone that winds and rain can impact the system before the storm passes. Electric lines are often torn down by limbs and trees, and dangling lines and lines on the ground are often hidden by debris and water – but can be deadly.
