DEMCO Outage and Restoration Update

Greenwell Springs, Louisiana – DEMCO reports 92 percent system restoration, with remaining outages of 8671. A workforce of 900 crewmen continue work to rebuild and restore DEMCO system infrastructure following Hurricane Ida.

Following the storm, more than 1,400 broken poles and hundreds of miles of distribution line were reported down. Until repairs at this level are completed, power cannot be distributed.

“Even though the damage from each storm varies, the process of powering up following a weather incident follows the same method every time in accordance with our Emergency Restoration Plan,” says Randy Pierce, CEO and general manager. “With this storm transmission infrastructure in large portions of our service area require rebuild and restoration, before we can safely distribute power.”

In Ascension, Livingston, St. Helena and Tangipahoa, crews continue to rebuild and repair poles, major spans of wire, and large circuits. Much of this work is in rural and boggy areas that require special equipment and the logistics are complex.

“Restoration estimates are based on knowledge we have at this time,” says Pierce. “As new areas are cleared, new damage and unforeseen challenges often add time to repairs, often extending them from hours to days.”

For members experiencing long-duration outages, especially when there are health and safety concerns, parish and state resources are listed at https://DEMCO.org/storm-center/storm-resources.

Crews are working their way south toward Pumpkin Center, and report 80 percent completion of the right-of-way reclamation. Nearly every structure on each side of I-12 requires repair or replacement for the remainder of the 4-mile trek to Pumpkin Center. A 22-man line crew with off road equipment is working to repair the main circuit. Timeline estimation is difficult due to the challenging terrain. Track equipment must traverse the right of way, but due to high water and boggy soil conditions, delays can amount to hours or days per instance, depending on the circumstances.
