Greenwell Springs, LA – At DEMCO’s 2023 annual membership meeting held Saturday, May 13, fifty scholarships were awarded to co-op members totaling $125,000.
DEMCO received 224 applications for this year’s random drawing from members in its seven-parish service area: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and West Feliciana.
“The DEMCO Scholarship program is one of the many benefits of DEMCO co-op membership and one of the ways we show our commitment to community,” says Pierce.
Winners must meet all eligibility requirements for the 2023/2024 academic year for each of two consecutive semesters to receive the award.
DEMCO scholarship funds are not taken from normal operating funds. Through legislative changes made in 1993, unclaimed deposits are allowed to remain in a general scholarship fund to assist co-op member-students within the DEMCO service area rather than forwarding the monies to the state’s general treasury fund.
Established in 1938, DEMCO is the largest electric cooperative in Louisiana with 114,760+ meters and 9,195 miles of line in seven parishes: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and West Feliciana.
