Meter-based surge protectors will only guard against surges coming in through the electrical service, but when used together with auxiliary surge-protectors on telephone lines, cable services, and on individual devices, they are an essential part of a whole-home surge-protection strategy.

For only $7.95 per month, DEMCO will install and maintain a surge protector on the electric meter of your home or shop. If it ever fails to stop a power surge from entering your home through the meter, damaged electronics and appliances may be warrantied up to $50,000.

This is a three-point surge protection program designed to protect against power surges at the meter, phone and cable utility lines.

When this meter-based surge protector is installed on your outside electric meter, it works to prevent over-voltage from entering your home. Without it, power surges can enter through the meter and cause damage to your electronics and appliances. 

Lightning is the most common cause of power surges, but other factors such as birds, squirrels and trees interfering with power lines can also result in a power surge. 

Construction work, demand fluctuations in your home, and auto accidents involving utility poles can also cause power surges.

There is a monthly $7.95 charge (plus tax) for each meter. (home and/or shop)

Once you enroll in the DEMCO Energy Services meter-based surge protection program, we will install a surge protection device at your meter, cable and phone utility lines (as applicable). We ask that you monitor your meter device by checking to confirm that both indicator lights remain on. If one or both lights are off, then the device has may be damaged and will need to be replaced. Also, on the cable and phone line, please be sure that all wires are securely connected with no visibly cut wires. YES. Internal surge protectors will protect from internal power surges and direct or nearby lightning strikes that can enter the home via routes that bypass the surge protection system and enter the home in alternate ways, such as alarm system, wiring, plumbing and satellite connections, etc. A meter-based surge protector as well as a phone and cable protector (as applicable) at the member's location is designed to be the first line of defense from power surges.

You will see in the Current Service Detail of your bill:  ‘Strike Safe Surge Protector’ and the $7.95 charge (plus tax) for each meter (home and/or shop).

You should always see two lights on your device, as long as you have power at your location. These lights are a visible signal to you that the device is functioning properly. During a power outage, both red lights will be off. If one or both red lights are out, but you have not lost power to your home, please notify DEMCO Energy services at 225-262-2921.


Power surges can happen in many ways: when there's an interruption in the flow of electricity, when an increased delivery of power is interrupted, when electricity is sent flowing back into the system, when lightning strikes utility lines, or when a sudden increase of voltage is sent through the power system due to internal or external events.  

A power surge is a sudden increase of voltage that significantly exceeds the standard 120-volt flow of electricity that normally enters your home or building. As it shoots through the lines, it can cause tremendous damage to electronics and appliances. 

There are several factors that can trigger power flickers: lightning, damaged electrical equipment, and objects contacting power lines, including tree branches, vegetation - even animals. Faulty or substandard wiring can result in power surge and flickering. This may be the result of a loose wire connection or wiring issues causing stress to the wiring when electricity is in use.  This is a common issue in older homes. It can be difficult to assess the condition of wiring without getting behind the drywall, but a few things that may alert you to an in-home issue include visible burns marks around electrical outlets, vibration or a buzzing sound coming from outlets, circuit breakers frequently trip. For any of these and other concerns inside, call a certified electrician.

Power outages are a loss of power most often caused by a problem with your power supply or infrastructure (damaged power line, etc.) 

Install whole-home surge protection. Unplug electronics during a storm. Use individual plug strip surge protectors. Inspect your wiring. Faulty or substandard wiring can make power surge problems worse. Although power surges are not 100% preventable, (i.e. when lightning strikes direct, or in close proximity to the home) we can reduce and, in some cases, eliminate their effect on electronics and motor driven appliances.
